Product Description

BRAVIA meets the internet

Brace yourself for a dramatically expanded Sony BRAVIA cinema experience. Sure, by now you're used to the sharp, high definition realism, vivid colors, and smooth video reproduction for which Sony BRAVIA LCD panels are known. Now it's time to discover a new dimension of the BRAVIA experience. With Sony's W5100 series LCDs, BRAVIA meets the internet. All you need to enjoy a variety of new features is an existing home network and/or a broadband internet connection. Hook the KDL-46W5100 to your network via an ethernet cable, and you're ready to go. First off, BRAVIA Internet Video lets you enjoy select premium and free on-demand entertainment — access online video, music, and more from over 20 providers, including Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Sports Illustrated, and more. Second, BRAVIA Internet Widgets allow you to personalize your viewing experience by selecting, positioning, and resizing widgets on your LCD display. Widgets are small applications that provide you with the latest in news, weather, stock info, and more at the touch of a button. Finally, the KDL-46W5100's DNLA compatibility gives you the ability to access digital photos, music, and video from your PC or other DNLA-enabled devices, right on your BRAVIA HDTV!

BRAVIA goes Green

Sony's W5100 series LCDs serve up expanded functionality all the while using even less energy than previous models. Exceeding the U.S. government's ENERGY STAR 3.0 requirements by 15%, the KDL-46W5100 sports such features as Light Sensor technology an Dynamic Backlight Control, adjusting and controlling backlight intensity in response to ambient room light and video content. Further, all of the KDL-46W5100's packaging materials and printed materials are made of recycled carton, paper, and plastics.

Smooth sports, seamless action . . . Motionflow 120Hz

It's Friday night, which means it's Fights Night. You and a select group of your closest friends gather to catch the ring-side action and munch a few snacks and beverages. Since, well forever, the tradition has been to gather at someone else's house for the festivities . . . until now. Thanks to your KDL-46W5100's Motionflow technology, your home theater room is the new ring-side favorite. Using 120Hz processing, Motionflow technology is able to serve up the fast action of sports and movies with a "there-in-person" level of smoothness and realism. Five-hit combos are no longer a blur of glove and arm, nor chase scenes a streak of tire and chrome.

This engine runs on Ones and Zeros

Sure, you already know that the KDL-46W5100's full HD 1080p LCD screen enhances your home video experience by displaying 1920 x 1080p images — the highest resolution available — thereby also making it a perfect match for taking full advantage of Blu-ray Disc and PlayStation content. But do you know why? Video performance is a function of more than resolution: video processing is a key element, and when it comes to processing, the KDL-46W5100 uses nothing less than an engine. Sony's BRAVIA Engine 3 technology is a fully digital video processor that employs a collection of unique algorithms to significantly reduce video "noise" and produce sharp, vibrant, lifelike images through which a 1080p-resolution panel reaches its full potential.

Not of the culinary variety — noise reduction

Distortion and variance caused by interference from other electronic components are inherent characteristics of any electronic signal. Such minor disturbances in a signal's integrity can result in flaws in the signal's output — like a video image on an HDTV — and these flaws are often referred to simply as "noise". Not willing that you should have to endure a less-than-perfect HD video image on your new KDL-46W5100, Sony designed this LCD with Dynamic Noise Reduction. This technology intelligently identifies and dramatically reduces signal noise according to the motion and brightness of each scene for clearer, crisper images, frame after frame.

Contrast — Advanced and enhanced

Your flat panel HDTV and a poorly lit alley are not the same thing. "Well, duh", you might say, but we're serious. Whereas, with good reason, you might not want to see what's lurking in a dark alley's shadows, when it comes to watching video on your HDTV, you do want to be able to see every detail (hence, high definition), even in dark or shadowy scenes. Using real-time image processing to dynamically adjust backlight levels, the KDL-46W5100's Advanced Contrast Enhancer reproduces improved contrast for deep blacks in darker scenes and fine detail in shadows, revealing all the details that the director intended for you to see. Now, if the movie you're watching has a scene with a poorly lit alley . . .

A smattering of interactivity

There are a few more words that can be added to the list describing the KDL-46W5100, like expandable, interactive, and experiential. First, Sony's Xross Media Bar user interface — enhanced by Rich Graphics — offers easy and fast icon-based navigation of all your KDL-46W5100's functions. Second, Sony's Digital Media Extender (DMex) offers system expandability via a digital connection: add optional modules, like the BRAVIA Internet Video Link, or upcoming modules for optimal future compatibility. Finally, an integrated TV Guide on-screen interactive program guide delivers continually updated program listings so that you never miss your favorite shows.

Film, from start to finish

Way out west in Tinseltown, your favorite films are recorded at 24 frames per second. Unfortunately, most television content is recorded at 30fps, so most televisions are designed to display motion pictures at this speed. Until now, the solution has been to interpolate, or add, artificial scenes into 24fps content in order to "stretch" it to fit a TV's 30fps capability. Recent demands on the part of movie lovers for an authentic home-cinema experience have lead to technological advancements making a 24fps experience possible at home. High definition video like that recorded onto Blu-ray Disc contains 24p (or, progressive-scan 24fps video content) that brings true film into your home. But wait! There's still one more piece the puzzle. While true 24fps film makes it from Hollywood to your Blu-ray player, just like a movie-house feature film, it needs a screen to be enjoyed . . . i.e. your flat panel needs to be able to display 24p content. Enter the KDL-46W5100 with 24p True Cinema. This technology is fully capable of displaying 24fps video thanks to specific video processing that reproduces film-based images as video content. Start popping the popcorn.

Ah, BRAVIA

As a leader in products with HDMI connectivity, Sony has created BRAVIA Theatre Sync technology to go beyond simple audio and video transmission. When you combine your new KDL-46W5100 with a select number of other BRAVIA audio and video products, control functions will also be transmitted via the HDMI cable. With "One Touch Play", operations that took several steps are reduced to one. Press the PLAY button on the remote, watch the audio and/or the video component(s) turn on then the BRAVIA KDL-46W5100 television will turn on and switch to the correct video input...Simple...Easy...BRAVIA Theatre Sync.
