The Blu-ray player that stands alone

Naturally, Sony's BDP-S360 single-disc Blu-ray Disc player delivers the stunningly real full HD 1920 x 1080p video for which Blu-ray Disc is known (more on this below), but video is only half of the Blu-ray story. In addition to high definition video, Blu-ray Disc is able to deliver full, lossless 7.1-channel surround sound . . . i.e. the soundtrack that the director intended for you to hear. Now, while most Blu-ray players require that you connect to one of the latest HD home theater receivers to decode this multi-channel audio, Sony's BDP-S360 is built to do the work itself. Integrated Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoding serve up the HD audio experience right from the source — the Blu-ray Disc itself. Not only do you not need a brand-new receiver to decode these advanced audio formats, but the audio signal will also have a higher degree of fidelity because it is decoded before being transmitted along an A/V cable to the receiver. The blue ray

At the very heart of the matter, the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is a matter of wavelength. While a wide red laser is used to write and read DVD content, a much narrower blue-violet laser is used for Blu-ray Disc media. That's it. Oh, but what a difference it makes! Because Blu-ray uses a narrower laser, it is able to fit more information into the same space. But how much more information? Try: five times more! Because of this vastly expanded storage capacity, Blu-ray Disc is able to store full HD 1920 x 1080p video, as opposed to DVD's standard definition 640 x 480i. And that's just the beginning. There's still plenty of space left over for 7.1-channel lossless surround sound, as well as a wide range of bonus materials. All because of a teeny little blue ray.

Go beyond Blu-ray with BD-Live

Bringing you the next generation of home-theater interactivity, BD-Live functionality gives you the ability to download and stream bonus content from the internet for your favorite Blu-ray titles. Not only can you watch deleted scenes, shorts, and trailers, but you can also participate in online gaming and messaging. Sony's BDP-S360 is BD-Live ready, which means that when you connect the BDP-S360 to your pre-existing internet connection via the ethernet port, and connect a USB-based flash memory device using the USB port, you can discover the world of BD-Live interactivity on compatible Blu-ray titles. Thanks to built-in DVD video upscaling, the BDP-S360 is able to upconvert the standard definition video on all your DVDs to near-HD 1080p levels . . . ideal for viewing on your HDTV. And while Precision Cinema HD upscaling further enhances standard definition video, the BDP-S360's support for a wide variety of audio and video formats lets you enjoy music and video from multiple sources. Not only does the BDP-S360 offer playback of DVD video and CD audio, but it also supports AVC-HD video, MP3 audio, and JPEG images recorded onto DVD or CD media.

HDMI advanced connectivity

Bringing you the absolute best in connectivity, Sony's BDP-S360 features one HDMI output. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on this single cable. Also, HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI.
